ATLANTA — New concert film “Shine a Light” combines the forces of two behemoths: the meticulous film director Martin Scorsese and the rambunctious gods of rock ‘n’ roll the Rolling Stones.
Scorsese (”The Departed”), usually the man calling the shots, is placed at the mercy of the ever-unpredictable British rockers. The two heavyweights collaborate for a concert film to end all concert films.
And, yeah, it was a pretty good show.
The film opens on the thick glasses and thicker brow of Scorsese prominently furrowed. The days are counting down until the performance at New York’s Beacon Theatre and the director still needs the setlist, which the band continues to sit on for far longer than Scorsese is comfortable.
“Can we know, if at all possible, what they’re going to play?” Scorsese asks, a tinge of desperation in his voice. The behind-the-scenes footage pitting the two forces proves humorous and heightens the suspense before the opening note resonates.
Finally, in the control booth, Scorsese is handed the long-awaited scrap of paper — and then, the lights come on.
