One year after its launch in October 2007, JuicyCampus.com now boasts gossip pages for 500 colleges and universities. “With the simple mission of enabling online anonymous free speech on college campuses,” Juicy Campus’ blog-like posts are causing controversy nationwide. While creators claim it’s harmless fun, some schools call it slander and aim to ban the site from their campuses altogether. UWIRE affiliates explain the Web site’s effects on their school and how students are fighting to stop the rumors.

New gossip Web site draws concern at George Washington U.

The juice is loose on George Washington University’s campus and not everyone is thrilled about it.

The controversial gossip Web site JuicyCampus.com, which launched a GW page last month, encourages students to post anonymously about people and groups on campus. Student leaders and administrators across the country have condemned the site for promoting slanderous and damaging discussions about students’ private lives.

The forum allows anyone, including people unaffiliated with the university, to post or read content about a range of subjects—with full names included. Some of these topics: “Biggest Slut on Campus,” “Most Surprising Gay Guys” and “Best Places to Get High on Campus.”

Student Association Executive Vice President Kyle Boyer, a junior, said members of the senate were discussing whether or not to attempt to block Juicy Campus at GW, but they had not reached a concrete decision.

‘Juicy’ Web site stirs controversy with U. Wisconsin gossip

“College campuses are full of sex juices. Where have u done the deed?” a post on JuicyCampus.com asks of University of Wisconsin-Madison students. It is posts like this that are beginning to cause controversy on campus and at universities nationwide.

UW-Madison’s name was recently added to the list of campuses on JuicyCampus, a Web site allowing users to anonymously publish campus-related gossip online. The site functions like a blog, featuring threads on personal student stories—some even citing specific names of students.

New Web site dishes all the ‘juicy’ details

Usually when rumors spread around a campus as large as the Rutgers’, the source can be difficult to locate. But thanks to a new Web site, JuicyCampus.com, finding out who said what just got a lot harder.

The Web site allows students to post information about their peers online. Topics range from who is the hottest girl at a university to who is the biggest creep. Other students can then post replies and vote on whether they agree or disagree with the original poster’s comments on the individual.

The catch is that all information is posted anonymously so students are never able to find out who said what.

Juicy Campus gives forum to anonymous posters

A Web site called JuicyCampus.com is raising concerns on college campuses across the country about where to draw the line between harmless discussion and malicious gossip.

The cyber gossip grapevine reached the University of Kansas on Sept. 2, when JuicyCampus, which allows students to post unfiltered and anonymous comments, added a page for the university. Since then, people have started 368 threads about the university.

U. Alabama students on gossip site Juicy Campus

JuicyCampus.com, a site that allows users to anonymously post gossip and rumors about others, now has posts targeting University of Alabama students. The university was added to the gossip site in the past month.

Too juicy: Ball State U. student government, Greek leaders sound off on gossip site

Frank Hood knew it would happen. He just knew.

As the Ball State University Student Government Association President, Hood knew he would get smeared because of his visible campus position. But after users on the Web site Juicy Campus called him one of the biggest whores on campus, the “juice” left a sour taste in his mouth.

“This is what happens on the middle school playground, not college,” he said. “This is a slander Web site.”

Penn State Greeks feel backlash from ‘juicy’ site

JuicyCampus—a Web site with anonymous postings detailing such topics as “athlete cheaters,” “freshman guys getting laid” and “Official STD rankings fall ‘08″—is an obstacle the Panhellenic Council is facing this year for recruitment, a PHC official said.

A significant number of posts deal with Greek life. Posts range from fraternity and sorority “tier” rankings based on partying and “all around coolness” to fraternities or sororities who do drugs.

JuicyCampus: Spreading Oklahoma State U. rumors faster than ever

It was easy for her to shrug off being called a “slut.”

The posts about her “low” GPA didn’t bother her, either.

But when Ali Pickens read strangers’ posts picking apart her family’s past, she wanted to leave OSU.

Pickens, an apparel design freshman, said she first laughed about Juicy Campus but couldn’t keep a breakdown at bay. Everyday activities such as attending class and socializing became hard for her.

Juicy Campus creator: ‘Hate isn’t juicy’

Within a few days of the College of William and Mary’s Juicy Campus launch, site CEO Matt Ivester contacted The Flat Hat offering an interview.

The Duke graduate seldom grants interview requests, but was interested in the popularity of the site on our campus. Within days of its introduction, “William and Mary” quickly rose to the top of Juicy Campus’s search terms. As students denounced the site and called for its ban, more still continued to post on it.

According to Ivester, such is the nature of gossip.

College of William & Mary enters virtual campus grapevine

“I actually feel bad for his brothers who have to pretend they like him.” Those are harsh words to read about anyone, much less yourself, as Andrew Ullrich ’11 found out last week as he browsed Juicy Campus.

In a thread titled “People you hate,” one responder asserts, “andrew ullrich without a doubt.” In this and another thread—“why does everyone hate andrew ullrich so much?”—people tear apart his character.

‘Juicy’ Georgetown: Scandalous site hits campus

The forum for campus gossip at Georgetown may move from the bathroom stall to the World Wide Web.

On Wednesday, Georgetown became a “supported campus” of JuicyCampus.com, a campus gossip Web site, joining the 380 other colleges and universities that have gossip pages on the site. Anyone can request that a college or university become a “juicy campus,” although requests must be approved by a site administrator.

JuicyCampus.com launched an improved version of its Web site earlier this month, promising to increase its service to more than 500 universities by the end of September.

Juicy Campus Web site faces opposition from U. Florida officials

In recent months, the college gossip Web site JuicyCampus.com has attracted the ire of students and administrators across the country.

Amid calls to shut the site down, free speech advocates have come to its defense.
But earlier this year, the site gained two new adversaries at the University of Florida, and according to a UF law professor, its troubles could just be starting.

After about a dozen students came to him and complained about the site, Student Body President Kevin Reilly sent a letter in June to Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, urging him to investigate the popular gossip site that allows people to post anonymously. The letter, also signed by Marc Hoit, UF’s former chief information officer, states that the site plays host to cyberbullying and raises concerns about public welfare and safety.
