CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — I’m a sucker for ghost movies, particularly those involving spirits of the emaciated, dark-black-haired, Asian female variety. I’m the guy who took his TV out of his room for a week after seeing “The Ring” in high school (16 isn’t really that young, is it?). What’s more surprising is that the never-ending supply of toned down Japanese-horror remakes continue to give me the tinglies. “The Grudge” scared me. “Dark Water” scared me. Even “The Grudge 2″ kind of freaked me out. Yes, I’m that lame.

Las Vegas is by and large a facade full of glitz and glamour, a cesspool of hedonistic pleasures to which people think they can escape but will ultimately bite them in the backside. It has become Hollywood’s favorite backdrop for stories on the hubris of man, a way to show the greed and pride in all of us and the nasty results that follow if one chooses to pursue them. We get it.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A few weeks ago, I sat down with the charming Jim Sturgess, the up-and-coming 26 year old British actor best know for his role as Jude in the Beatles musical, “Across the Universe.” In the upcoming film “21,” (based on the book “Bringing Down the House” by Ben Mezrich) Mr. Sturgess plays Ben Campbell, an MIT student who uses his math acumen to win millions playing blackjack in Vegas.

Whereas film adaptations of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “The Cat in the Hat” failed to do the great Dr. Seuss justice, the animated take on “Horton Hears a Who” more than makes up for those films’ shortcomings. A fun film filled with heart, “Horton” stays true to Seuss’ work and is sure to delight audiences young and old alike.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The trailer for “Vantage Point” is like one of those flashing Internet pop-ups that tell you you’re the 999,999th person to visit their site and you’ve just won a 60-inch plasma TV. It may be tempting, but “clicking here” will only result in disappointment and a waste of valuable time.
