More than 1,000 people from across California, including UC students, gathered at the steps of the state capitol in Sacramento to protest the state’s proposed student fee increases that would accompany the state’s proposed budget cuts.

An artist, who gained notoriety for a Nicaraguan exhibit in August of 2007 for tying a stray dog to a wall in an art gallery and starving it to death, believed his exhibition was a tribute to a Nicaraguan burglar who was killed in Costa Rica by two guard dogs.

Last week, student government leaders at several Philadelphia universities, including Penn, Temple and Villanova Universities and Haverford College, jointly authored a letter endorsing Senator Barack Obama as the Democratic candidate for president. Despite criticism, they are standing by the endorsement.

Officials said the program provided a safe environment in which to get a taste of street life, and that nobody had been hurt in the 20-odd years of the program’s existence.

With the Pennsylvania primary four days away, Penn for Obama and Penn Democrats plan to continue Baracking the vote - only more so.

If the university intends to arbitrarily deny students the right to assemble, they should make sure to inform officers of which policy is allegedly violated. It is a student’s First Amendment right to protest, even if it’s something the university doesn’t want to hear.
